AEEGTA 2026 Technical Tours: City Waterfront Building – 627/635 Queens Quay W

This session offers a deep dive into the engineering and implementation of deep energy retrofits in existing public buildings. Attendees will explore the City of Toronto’s comprehensive retrofit of the City Waterfront Building at 627/635 Queens Quay West, a multi-use facility serving schools, a community centre, and child care operations.

The project supports the City’s TransformTO Net Zero Climate Action Strategy and Toronto’s target to achieve net-zero community-wide emissions by 2040. Through a phased retrofit approach, the building is expected to use 71% less energy, generate 83% fewer greenhouse gas emissions, reduce operating costs, and serve as a model for low-carbon retrofits across Toronto’s existing building stock.

Learning Objectives

  • Deep Retrofit Strategy: Understanding how a comprehensive, phased retrofit approach can significantly reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions in an existing occupied building.
  • Building Decarbonization: Reviewing the role of energy efficiency, renewable energy measures, and clean local generation in reducing reliance on fossil fuels for heating and hot water.
  • Operational Integration: Evaluating how retrofit measures can be implemented in complex, multi-tenant public buildings while maintaining comfort and functionality for building users.
  • Net-Zero Roadmaps: Understanding how projects like the City Waterfront Building support broader municipal climate targets and provide a replicable model for other existing buildings.
