Charlotte Anyango, PhD

In male-dominated fields, women often face unique challenges in making their voices heard and advancing their careers. This engaging session will explore the power of professional communication—from everyday workplace conversations to high-stakes meetings—and how it can shape credibility, influence, and leadership visibility.

Participants will learn strategies such as assertive communication, active listening, and effective body language to enhance their presence and impact. The session will also cover techniques for navigating difficult conversations and advocating for oneself in a professional setting. By mastering these skills, women can increase their confidence and bolster their ability to lead and influence within the industry.

Objectives:

  • Highlight how communication impacts perception, confidence, and promotion in the workplace.
  • Examine barriers women face in technical professions, such as self-silencing, interruptions, and feelings of being an impostor (impostor syndrome).
  • Share practical, daily strategies to build clarity, assertiveness, and influence through communication.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Gain a better understanding of how professional communication impacts credibility, leadership visibility, and career advancement in male-dominated industries.
  • Assess the impact of communication barriers on women's confidence and career advancement at work and determine what can be done to reduce them.
  •  Apply practical techniques for assertive verbal communication, active listening, and effective body language to enhance professional presence.
  • Develop strategies for navigating difficult conversations, addressing interruptions, and advocating for themselves in high-stakes or everyday workplace scenarios.
